During the offseason, while many of his Olympic Snowboarding competitors enjoy other sports recreationally,. The exceptionally gifted North American takes it a step further by competing professionally as a wakeboarder. His dedication to both sports not only helps him stay active but also serves as valuable cross training as he prepares for the Winter Olympic 2026 season.

I first got into snowboarding when I was about seven, he shared. Later, a friend from my snowboard team, Cameron Spalding who’s now on the national team talked me into heading out to L.A. for a wakeboarding contest to give it a try. This kind of crossover seems to be gaining traction, with athletes like the USA’s Fynn Bullock also excelling professionally in both sports.
I later discovered that a wake park was being built near my house, so I started going there regularly. Cameron and I ended up following similar paths and eventually began competing professionally. These days, I don’t compete in wakeboarding as much because snowboarding takes up most of the year. But I still do both, and they complement each other well it’s like cross-training, so it works out perfectly.
While juggling two sports might seem physically demanding, competing in different environments helps athletes avoid mental burnout. Despite the stark differences between snow and water, there are additional physical advantages as well. Having a professional career in two sports isn’t the unique aspect of Brearley’s extraordinary athletic journey.
It gives you a fresh perspective. The strain is quite different, and wakeboarding is tougher on the knees, but competing on the water helps with the rail and air elements of snowboarding. Alongside his love for sports, he also had a passion for hip-hop growing up, which led his mom to enroll him in breakdancing classes, sparking his creativity further.
The classes were a success, and he soon started competing in dance. I was open to trying anything; I just loved staying active. I even gave tap dancing a shot and enjoyed both. Stuck with it for about a year, competing in various contests, he shared. His diverse experiences, including dance, have contributed to his unique approach as he prepares for the Winter Olympic journey ahead.
Unfortunately, the commitment required for a team sport became too overwhelming, and dancing had to take a backseat. It reached a point where I was missing competitions because I was always away on snowboarding trips. It’s tough when you have to change the whole routine because one person isn’t there, so I had to stop doing it.
Snowboarders and wakeboarders have their feet strapped in tightly, limiting movement, so at first glance, there doesn’t seem to be a clear connection between those sports and dance. However, Brearley discovered that learning dance routines involved many of the same skills required to craft a slopestyle run, which helped him stay in sync and never miss a beat.

Winter Olympic Milano Cortina 2026: Calm under Pressure in Snowboarding
I think dance is similar because you’re creating a whole routine that you need to perfect and repeat as best as possible. Slopestyle is essentially the same it’s a series of different moves and rotations that you work to perfect. Focusing solely on snowboarding paid off for Brearley, allowing him to refine his skills and elevate his performance to the next level.
After showcasing his talent with three medals at the Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG), he made history as Canada’s first snowboarding slopestyle Crystal Globe winner in the 2023/24 season. It was a crazy season for me, and I honestly didn’t expect any of it, he admitted. I didn’t even know that Canada had never won the Globe before, so I didn’t have any specific expectations.
But it’s pretty amazing that considering all the incredible snowboarders Canada has had in the past, I’m the first to win it. There’s some added pressure now, but it just motivates me even more to keep achieving those results, he shared as he set his sights on the Winter Olympic Milano Cortina 2026, intending to continue to break barriers in the sport.
One of the Canadian snowboarding legends Brearley refers to is Mark McMorris. The 31-year-old has earned three Olympic slopestyle medals, won the world title in 2021, and has 11 Winter X Games titles to his name. I probably feel less nervous than most people. I remind myself that I have the skills and experience to attempt a certain trick.

Milano Cortina 2026: Brearley’s Unwavering Commitment to Snowboarding
Having grown up idolizing one of his country’s winter sports legends, competing alongside the veteran gave Brearley invaluable insights into snowboarding. When I first joined that team and started riding with someone I’ve looked up to since I first knew what snowboarding was, it was pretty crazy, Brearley said. I just have to stay aware and make sure I land on my feet.
Learning how he trained and prepared for contests was the best part. But he’s also just the nicest guy, and it’s incredible to have someone like him cheering us on, Brearley shared. Like McMorris, Brearley competes without fear. It’s this quality that enables him to land outrageous flips and spins and continue pushing the boundaries of the sport, always seeking new tests and pushy for merit with each act.
Even after accidents like his recent neck injury, Brearley’s confidence wasn’t shaken. Instead, he felt gratitude for what he had already accomplished and accepted the outcome. When he returned, he remained committed to his all-in approach to the sport, determined to pursue a medal at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. This mindset perfectly embodies someone competing in the flow state.
With that injury, I had no idea what the outcome would be. But being where I am in my career, I made peace with it. If that had been the end, I wouldn’t have had a bad run. Fortunately, I’ve been given another chance, and my approach to the sport will remain the same, he said, as he looks ahead to the Winter Olympic Milano Cortina 2026, where he hopes to continue pushing the limits of his performance.
